The forum has been undergoing a bit of a dry spell lately. Mostly my fault I guess, as I haven't put anything interesting in the forum to keep people coming back, but most of my time is going towards game updates so the site itself is doing well.

I've been slowly pulling back modship as there isn't anybody in the forums to mod anymore, so I didn't think you guys would care. Victor still is a mod as he seems to like making sticky postings

Other than posting sticky notes, there really isn't anything for a mod to do around here since nobody is posting messages. If this place ever does see any noticeable activity again, I'll re-enable the modding rights for our highest members. Leaving moderator privileges on without a need for them is a security risk, especially when the moderator isn't logging on everyday to make sure their account hasn't been compromised.

Does this mean I get to be a moderatior?

If you wanted the position, sure. But there would be two conditions. You would have to logon on a regular basis to make sure everything is running smoothly (at least a few times a week), and you can't act like a dictator changing people's messages (only moderate as a last resort).

As it stands though, there is no need for any moderators at this time. My anti-spambot software has gotten rid of the automated spammers, and no human poster has ever caused any problems here yet.

On a side note, I still don't know why no one comes here to say anything. The site stats show that 3000-4000 people play here daily. You'd figure some of them would migrate over to the forums, but meh... whatever.

mmnn, you've been gone for a month again...

It's not about the power, I don't care about that. It's about site security. With the non-stop Chinese hack attempts on the server and the Russian spam that keeps trying to get on the forum, I just can't risk having admin privileges on dormant accounts. If they crack your account, a lot of damage can be done to the server.

And yes, this stuff is real. Cheddar was hacked over a year ago and I learned my lesson then.


On a similar note. I built a World of Warcraft private server for my friends a couple of months ago using a fresh install of Ubuntu. In order to use it remotely, I needed to open up the SSH protocol. Since the server was in the "testing" stage, I decided to use the simple password "james" as it was quick to type (Ubuntu asks for your password A LOT). Needless to say the server was hacked in under 24 hours, and I was locked out. No damage done, but I did lose a lot of time figuring out what happened.

Lesson of the day, ALWAYS use a gibberish password, and different passwords for different places.

Laws for cyber-crimes in the USA are the strongest in the world. Although I am not sure if spambots are technically illegal, I am sure there must be some regulation that discourages them in the US.

Hackers in the US can look forward to a life of long prison sentences. It's why all the decent cracking groups (for software) exist outside of North America.
