Learning new programs. 1 Year, 11 Months ago
Hello everyone.

You may be wondering why everything looks so colorful :3

The reason being is because i recently started playing Second Life (for fun) with my sister and her friends.

One of her friends knows A LOT about scripting and how to make object in-game.

everyone can make stuff in that game, trouble is you have to know A LOT about HTML, Java, and C++ (which I'll be teaching myself through YouTube videos and other means at school.

So now I'll be learning all this mind boggling information! YAY! For the price of getting a lot of it out of the way before high-school is over and i go to college!

Fun Fun!

If anybody (James I mean you ) would like to post videos here that you dig up involving the following programs:

1. Second Life Scripting (basics)
2. Scripting (basics)
3. Java (basics)
4. C++ (basics)

I don't know what Second Life is first hand, but being the internet savvy guy that I am, I have stumbled upon the term from time to time in my readings. What little I know about it is that it's a virtual online environment kind of like The Sims (which I haven't played either). I'll just google it now to confirm.

Yup, looks like it.

Okay, with that out of the way let's get to the meat of the topic. Programming. For me, I've always learned best by doing, so I never found any use to online videos or real life teachers telling me how to code something. Programming is a very hands on subject. If you want to learn, start by programming "Hello World" in the language of your choice and go from there.

I recommend Java as a first language because the online documentation for it is incredibly detailed, there are a million Java tutorials, and every college uses it for their programming courses. Side note: I haven't been in the college programming scene for 5+ years, so maybe Java has been replaced by another starter language. Languages come and go, it's the logic behind them that you must learn.

If you need help with specific questions I can help. I haven't programmed in C++ for many many years though, so I won't be of much use there. And I won't know anything about the Second Life libraries, but I'd be willing to bet they have some detailed documentation on how to use it if they intended for everybody to make stuff for the game.
