TOPIC: We need a policy on profanity in game comments

We need a policy on profanity in game comments 2 Years, 5 Months ago
I dislike censoring, and so far I've only removed game posts which were pointless, like a happy face or a bunch of gibberish chars. But today Montrocity posted some special love letters for Victor in When Penguins Attack TD, and it got me thinking. Would comments like this actually get the site blocked in schools? I find flame wars funny, but if it means letting the site get blacklisted, perhaps it's time to decide upon an official policy for game comments.

The +/- point scoring system in game comments was made to stop people posting garbage, but it wouldn't work in the Montrocity case as a doubt he cares if he loses points or not.

So here are my choices. I can censor bad words with * symbols automatically, I can manually remove the comments altogether, or I can do nothing.

btw, this policy won't affect the forums. Feel free to insult each other as much as you want here

I might be overthinking the whole thing, so I just went and deleted the comments. It's probably in the site's best interest to keep the game comments clean.

I agree with the censor. I think if people are immature in the way they speak to others, then it can lead to cyber bullying and flaming, which schools don't like. but I know my school blocked this site because it has games on it in general.

I dislike censors as well btw >.<

Has your school blocked all of the clones as well? I'm always interested in how the clone sites do.

I wouldn't mind a censor, because I deal with one all the time in RuneScape. It seems to keep the communities conversations clean and nice. And if they're not nice they find creative ways to insult each other without cussing.

RuneScape uses the * filter.

Is there any way you could give moderators the power to remove bad comments from the game comments? Because I tend to comment on games a lot now.

A '*' filter can be setup to automatically censer any bad word I specify, so you wouldn't have to go in and manually edit each comment. It's done right away when the user posts. 99% of the problems in game comments is related to gibberish posts though, and swearing hasn't even surfaced until now, so I don't think the censer is needed at this point in time.

I *THINK* I can assign mod privileges to the game comment system, but it's not necessary right now. There are only about 5-10 comments made each day, and each comment is emailed directly to me, which I review during my daily maintenance. When the site becomes busier and I don't want hundreds of emails in my inbox each day, I'll take you up on your offer Vic.

i think that if someone says somthing really stupid, vulgar, or insulting you should block them from being able to post for a certain amount of time or get rid of them all together. do that same if they keep doing small stupid things.

of course i dont know how much work that would take plus if they are real ******** they might create another account and commit more pointless cyber terrorisim.

Hopefully just removing the comments will suffice, as chances are people who post vulgar stuff won't even return to the comment to know it's been removed.

Banning people is risky, as it's very confrontational and that runs the risk of escalation and them doing it again out of spite. The good news is I have a beefed up security system that I just installed a few weeks ago. It gives me a lot of control to block problem people/bots from signing up for membership. I had to implement new security measures after what I believe to be a spambot posted near child porn in the forums. Fortunately I was lucky enough to catch it within 20 minutes and removed it before anyone saw. I blocked the entire country of Russia as a result, but no one from Russia would be visiting an english site like this anyways, so I don't feel I'm keeping anyone legit out.

The vast majority of spam I've dealt with over the last two years has come from Russia, and I just got tired of dealing with it. I haven't blocked them from playing on the site though, just from registering accounts.
